What is the Paris ZFE?

The ZFE (Zone à Faibles Émissions) is the low emission zone covering Paris and most of the inner suburbs inside the A86 motorway ring — much wider than the historic centre. Inside it, every vehicle must display a Crit'Air (Certificat qualité de l'air) sticker on the windscreen, and the most polluting categories are restricted on weekdays.

The rule applies to French-registered and foreign-registered vehicles alike — tourists, business travellers and rental cars all need the sticker before entering the zone.

Crit'Air categories

  1. Crit'Air 0 — electric and hydrogen vehicles, no restrictions.
  2. Crit'Air 1 — recent petrol and hybrid vehicles, generally welcome.
  3. Crit'Air 2 and 3 — most current cars, currently allowed but the rules for older vehicles get stricter over time.
  4. Crit'Air 4, 5 and unclassified — older diesel and pre-1997 petrol vehicles, restricted on weekdays inside the ZFE.

How to get your Crit'Air sticker

  1. 1. Order only from the official site — certificat-air.gouv.fr. You'll need your vehicle registration document details.
  2. 2. Pay a few euros plus postage — the certificate itself is cheap; watch out for unofficial resellers charging inflated prices.
  3. 3. Order weeks ahead — it's mailed to you, including addresses outside France, so allow enough time before your trip.
  4. 4. Stick it on the inside of the windscreen, visible from outside, before entering the zone.

Watch out for

  • ⚠️ Fines apply for missing or invalid stickers, and for restricted categories driving on a banned day.
  • ⚠️ Camera enforcement is increasingly automated — you can be fined without ever being stopped.
  • ⚠️ The zone is bigger than it looks, covering much of the inner suburbs, not just central Paris.
  • ⚠️ Third-party sticker sites often overcharge for the same certificate — always use the official government site.
