Rome Metro, Bus & Tram Tickets: How It Actually Works
One ticket covers metro, bus and tram. Here are the prices, where to buy in the next five minutes, and the three mistakes that turn a €1.50 ride into a fine.
Short answer
A single BIT ticket costs €1.50 and lasts 100 minutes on buses and trams plus one metro ride. Passes cost €7 (24h), €12.50 (48h) and €18 (72h). Buy at metro machines, any tabacchi, or simply tap a contactless card at the reader.

Where to buy in the next five minutes
- Tap and go. At metro turnstiles and on buses you can tap a contactless card or phone at the reader; the BIT fare is charged automatically. Use the same card all day.
- Tabacchi. Any shop with a white T sign sells tickets, usually cash-friendly and open early morning to evening.
- Metro machines. Touchscreens with English; cards accepted. Queues are long at Termini, Colosseo and Ottaviano — the machine at the far end is usually free.
- Official app. Buy and activate on your phone. Activate before boarding, and keep enough data or download the ticket.
Three mistakes that cost you a fine
- ⚠️ Boarding a bus without stamping the paper ticket — inspectors treat it as fare evasion.
- ⚠️ Reusing the same 100-minute ticket for a second metro ride: metro entry is once only.
- ⚠️ Assuming a city ticket covers the airport train. It does not.
