Lost Passport in Rome: Find Your Embassy
Stolen documents, a flight in two days. Here is the order that actually works, and the map with every embassy and consulate in Rome.
Short answer
First file a police report (denuncia) at any police or Carabinieri station, then take the stamped copy to your embassy or consulate in Rome for an emergency travel document. Bring photo ID or a copy of the lost passport, passport photos and your flight details.
- Police report first — the consulate asks for it
- Consular sections: appointment, weekday mornings
- Emergency travel document: allow at least one working day

- 1. Police report. Any commissariato or Carabinieri station. How to file it →
- 2. Phone your consulate before crossing the city. Most publish an out-of-hours emergency number for lost documents.
- 3. Gather what they ask for: the stamped report, any photo ID, a photo or scan of the lost passport, two passport photos, your ticket and address in Rome, a means of payment.
- 4. Tell them your flight date. Emergency travel documents are issued for a specific journey — the date drives the priority.
- 5. Inform your airline and hotel. Some airlines need the document details reissued on the booking before check-in.
Two things people get wrong
- Embassy to Italy ≠ embassy to the Holy See. Many countries run two separate missions in Rome at different addresses. Consular services for travellers are at the mission to Italy.
- Holidays close both. Consular sections observe Italian public holidays and their own national ones, so a Friday loss can mean a Monday appointment.

FAQ
›Police report or embassy first?
Police report first. The consulate normally asks for the stamped copy before issuing an emergency travel document.
›How long does an emergency document take?
Often the same or the next working day when you have the report and photos, but it depends on your consulate — tell them your flight date when you call.
›Do I need an appointment?
Usually yes, though lost-document cases are treated as urgent. Call the emergency consular number before travelling across Rome.
›Can I use a photocopy of my passport?
It is not a travel document, but it speeds up identification a lot. Keep a photo of your passport in your email or cloud storage.
