How to avoid ZTL fines in Rome

Rome's ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone) covers the historic center, Trastevere and Tridente with different hours per sector. A fine starts at around €100 and can reach you months later.

  • ALWAYS check the sector's active hours before driving in: they vary by weekday, weekend and summer schedule.
  • Gates are automatic cameras — there's no barrier, but the fine is issued anyway.
  • If you're in a rental car, the fine is charged to the rental company's card with an extra fee.

What is the ZTL in Rome?▾
ZTL stands for Zona a Traffico Limitato — restricted traffic zones in Rome's historic center. Cameras at every gate automatically read license plates and issue fines (around €100) to unauthorized vehicles entering during active hours.
What are the Rome ZTL hours in 2026?▾
The main daytime ZTL (Centro Storico, sectors A–F) is active Monday–Friday 06:30–18:00 and Saturday 14:00–18:00. Trastevere (sector G) runs Mon–Fri 06:30–10:00 and 16:30–19:00, plus Sat 14:00–19:00. Outside these windows, the area is open to all traffic.
How much is a Rome ZTL fine?▾
Around €100 per violation. Each entry through a different gate counts as a separate fine. Rental car companies typically add a €40–60 admin fee on top to forward the ticket to you.
Can tourists drive in Rome's ZTL?▾
Only with authorization. Hotel guests can be registered by their hotel for a temporary pass. Electric vehicles can register in advance for free access. Disabled permits issued in the EU are recognized. Without one of these, park outside the ZTL — large car parks at Villa Borghese, Termini, and along the Tiber are best.

What about the night ZTL (Movida)?▾
On Friday and Saturday nights, additional ZTL zones activate in Trastevere, San Lorenzo and Testaccio (typically 21:30–03:00). The map above focuses on the main daytime Centro Storico ZTL.

What time does the Rome ZTL end on weekdays?▾
The main Centro Storico daytime ZTL ends at 18:00 (6:00 PM) Monday to Friday. After 18:00 the area is open to all traffic until 06:30 the next morning, except where the night/Movida ZTL is active on weekends.
Does the Rome ZTL work on Sundays and holidays?▾
No — the daytime Centro Storico ZTL is not active on Sundays or public holidays. You can drive freely in the historic center on those days (parking is still restricted).
Will I get a ZTL fine in a rental car?▾
Yes. Cameras read the plate regardless of who is driving. The fine (~€100) is sent to the rental company, which forwards it to you with an admin fee of €40–60. Some companies charge per ticket, so multiple entries multiply the total.
How do I know if my hotel is inside the ZTL?▾
Check your hotel address against the live map above. If it falls inside one of the colored sectors, email the hotel your license plate at least 24 hours before arrival — they must register it with Roma Mobilità for your stay dates, otherwise you'll be fined on arrival.
