Best strategy
Use metro park-and-ride lots or a garage outside the ZTL, then continue by public transport. Do not rely on street parking in the historic centre.
Blue, white and yellow lines
Blue lines are paid parking, white lines are free where allowed, yellow spaces are reserved. Always read local signs because street rules vary by area and time.
Hotel inside the ZTL
Ask the hotel before arrival which gate to use and whether they register plates. Do not cross first and ask later unless the hotel explicitly confirms the process.
When to avoid driving
Avoid Friday and Saturday evenings near Trastevere, Testaccio and the historic centre. Events, football matches and strikes can change traffic dramatically.
