Rome Public Transport 2026: Metro, Bus, Tram & Airports Guide

Rome's public transport network — operated by ATAC — covers the city with 3 metro lines, ~350 bus routes, 6 tram lines and a regional rail system (FL). Tickets are interchangeable across all modes. Here is everything tourists need to navigate Rome efficiently and cheaply.

Tickets and prices (2026)

BIT (single ride): €1.50, valid 100 minutes for unlimited bus/tram and one metro ride. Roma 24h: €7. Roma 48h: €12.50. Roma 72h: €18. CIS (weekly): €24. Buy at metro stations, tobacco shops (tabacchi), newsstands or via the MyCicero app. Validate paper tickets at yellow machines on bus/tram and turnstiles in metro.

Metro lines

Metro A (orange): Anagnina ↔ Battistini, passes Termini, Spagna, Ottaviano (Vatican), San Giovanni. Metro B (blue): Rebibbia/Jonio ↔ Laurentina, passes Termini, Colosseo, Piramide. Metro C (green): Monte Compatri ↔ San Giovanni (extension to Colosseo opening soon). Service: 05:30–23:30 (Sat until 01:30). Trains every 4–10 minutes.

From Fiumicino Airport (FCO) to Rome

Leonardo Express (best): direct train to Termini, 32 minutes, €14. Departures every 15 min, 06:23–22:53. FL1 regional train: €8, slower (~45 min) but stops at Trastevere, Ostiense, Tiburtina. SIT/Terravision/T.A.M. buses: €6–7, ~55 min to Termini. Taxi: fixed rate €55 from FCO to inside Aurelian walls.

From Ciampino Airport (CIA) to Rome

No direct rail link. Terravision/SIT buses: €6, ~40 min to Termini, departures synced with flights. ATAC bus 720 + Metro A: cheapest, ~€2, ~60 min. Taxi: fixed rate €40 from CIA to inside Aurelian walls.

Taxi tips

Use only official white taxis with meter and roof sign. Standard fare starts at €3 daytime, €5 nighttime, €7 holidays. Fixed airport rates apply only to/from inside the historic walls and only with city-licensed taxis. Always ask for a receipt. Apps: itTaxi, FreeNow.

Night buses and Sunday service

Metro closes at 23:30 (01:30 Sat). Night bus network N1, N2 covers metro routes. Sundays and holidays: reduced bus frequency. Check the Moovit app or atac.roma.it for live schedules.

  • What is the cheapest way from Fiumicino to Rome?

    FL1 regional train at €8, with stops at Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina. Leonardo Express is faster (32 min direct to Termini) at €14.

  • How much is a Rome metro ticket?

    A single BIT ticket is €1.50 and is valid for 100 minutes (one metro ride + unlimited bus/tram transfers).

  • Is the Roma Pass worth it?

    Yes if you plan to visit 2+ museums and ride transit often. Roma 48h (€12.50) is just transit; Roma Pass 72h (~€55) includes 2 free museums plus unlimited transit.

  • Are Rome taxis safe?

    Official white taxis with roof sign and meter are safe and regulated. Avoid unmarked cars or anyone offering a 'special rate' at the airport.
