Shuttle bus to Termini (cheapest, most popular)
Three companies run nonstop shuttles from Ciampino arrivals to Roma Termini station: Terravision, SitBusShuttle and Schiaffini/Rome Airport Bus. Price 6–7€ one way (9–11€ return), buy online or at the desk just outside arrivals. Travel time 40 minutes in normal traffic, up to 60 min in rush hour. Departures every 30–40 min from 04:30 to 23:30 (last bus tied to last flight). The bus stops at Termini's Via Giolitti side — 5 minutes to metro A/B and city taxis.
Official taxi flat rate (best for hotels in the center)
The fixed white-taxi tariff from Ciampino to anywhere inside the Aurelian walls (i.e. the historic center) is 40€ flat, max 4 passengers and luggage included. It's printed on the door of every official Rome taxi. Outside the walls or to suburbs the meter runs (typically 25–45€). Take ONLY the white taxis in the official queue outside arrivals; ignore anyone offering a ride inside the terminal — those are unlicensed and often charge 80–100€. The 40€ price is one-way, day or night, no surcharges.
Train + bus combo (best for Trastevere / outer Rome)
The 520 ATAC city bus connects Ciampino airport to Anagnina metro A station (15 min, 1.50€ with a standard BIT ticket). Or take the local Schiaffini/Cotral bus to Ciampino train station (10 min, 1.20€), then Trenitalia regional train to Roma Termini or Tuscolana (15 min, 1.30€). Total cost: about 2.50–3€, time 50–70 min with transfers. Worth it only if you're heading to a station the metro/regional train serves directly (Trastevere, Tiburtina, Ostiense) — otherwise the shuttle bus is faster and barely more expensive.
Uber, Free Now and Bolt
Uber operates in Rome only as Uber Black/Lux (no UberX) — fare to the center 55–75€, higher with surge. Free Now and ItTaxi apps call a regular white taxi to the airport queue but DON'T override the flat 40€ rate to the center — the app shows the metered estimate, the driver still has to apply the fixed price on arrival (always confirm before departure). Bolt has limited Rome coverage. Honest take: just take an official taxi from the queue at 40€; the apps don't save money for Ciampino airport runs.
Pre-booked private transfer (best for early/late flights, families)
Companies like Welcome Pickups, Rome Cabs and Daytrip pre-book a driver who meets you in arrivals with a name sign. Price 50–70€ for a sedan (1–3 pax + luggage), 75–95€ for a van (up to 8 pax). You pay online in advance, no language barrier, no queue. Worth it for: arrivals 23:00–05:00 (shuttle gone, taxi queue can be empty), families with car seats (request in advance), groups of 4+ where the per-person cost matches the shuttle. Book at least 24 hours ahead.
What to do if you arrive late at night
Ciampino has scheduled flights until ~23:30 and the airport closes overnight (no 24h waiting hall). The shuttle bus runs until the last flight. After that: 1) Official taxi flat rate 40€ is always available — the queue is shorter at night but at least one car is on duty. 2) Pre-booked transfer is safest if your flight is delayed past midnight. 3) NEVER accept a ride from someone approaching you inside the terminal — it's the most common scam at Ciampino, with quoted prices of 80–120€ for the same trip. Walk straight to the official taxi queue outside the main exit.
Ciampino to Fiumicino (if you need to switch airports)
Some travelers connect via Ciampino then fly out of Fiumicino. Options: dedicated airport-to-airport shuttle (Terravision, 25€, 60–75 min, runs hourly), taxi flat rate 50€ (printed on the door), or train via Termini (Schiaffini bus to Ciampino train station + Leonardo Express from Termini, about 75–90 min total, 20€). Allow at least 4 hours between flights to be safe.
The honest recommendation
Going to a hotel in the historic center, daytime, 1–2 people with normal luggage: take the shuttle bus to Termini (6€) and a taxi (8–12€) the last mile — total 15–20€, the smartest mix of cost and comfort. Going to a hotel inside the center, night arrival or 3+ people with luggage: take the official flat-rate taxi at 40€ (still a bargain split four ways). Going to Trastevere or outside the wall ring: shuttle to Termini, then metro/tram/Uber. Avoid the train+bus combo unless you're a backpacker chasing the lowest possible price.
